Plane Crash That Killed 10 In Siberia Wasn't An Accident, Investigators Say
A Russian Su-30 military jet crashed into a river in Siberia, authorities said Wednesday. The accident occurred during a flight test in Irkutsk, on the banks of the Angara River, where pilots were testing their system of tracking missiles and updating their software. Investigators said the air force was using a MiG-31 jet to verify navigation systems when it lost contact with ground controllers last week. The Sukhoi Su-30 military jet was on a test flight when it came down in Irkutsk, authorities say.
The plane crashed into a street near the city's main airport on Friday morning, catching fire and destroying several cars. There were no casualties reported, though some people were trapped inside their vehicles.
Russian news outlets said there were three crew members aboard the plane. The Russian Defense Ministry said it had been carrying out an air show at the time of the crash.
In a statement posted on its website, the ministry said that preliminary information suggested that "no one was injured in the incident." It added that investigators are looking into what caused the crash and whether it could have been avoided.
